Volunteer Opportunities at First Learning Center

Adult Volunteer Opportunities

Classroom Assistants: If you enjoy working with young children and helping them develop in age appropriate ways, you will definitely want to sign on as a classroom assistant.  Projects include helping children with games and activities, reading stories, sharing information about your job, hobbies, or talents, assisting with art, science, or math projects, and teaching a song or sharing a musical instrument.  Whether you share your time and talents on a one-time basis or once a week, your presence in the classroom will make a difference in the lives of young learners. Letter Buddies: What could be more fun than receiving mail from a young child?  First Learning Center preschoolers and their teachers are eager to have YOU as a penpal!  Here's how it works:  Members of the congregation volunteer to be matched with one or more 3-5 year olds.  Letter Buddies exchange short notes, drawings, or cards on a regular basis throughout the school year (August through May).  No postage is required; letters can be left in the church office.  Offer friendship while helping First Learning Center children learn about written communication in an age-appropriate way.  To be a letter buddy, contact This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Library-Time Story Reader: Child-oriented, enthusiastic book-lovers are invited to read aloud to small groups of First Learning Center preschoolers in the church library.  Library time is scheduled twice a month on Wednesdays and Thursdays.  Volunteers choose whether to be a one-time guest reader or to volunteer more regularly.  Guests may bring a favorite picture book or read a book selected by the teaching staff.  Readers, contact This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. All adults working directly with children are expected to participate in a First Learning Center volunteer orientation and to have a background check.

Hospitality Crew: Needed early in the fall, these volunteers help extend a First Lutheran welcome to all First Learning Center students and families.  Hospitality Crew volunteers welcome, greet, and encourage each student and family member as they enter our doors for the first time.  Crew members may also be called upon to provide coffee and refreshments each quarter for late morning Family Support gatherings.  Contact Heidi Widner for more information or to volunteer.

Youth Volunteer Opportunities

For youth that enjoy working with young children, volunteer opportunities are available.  We offer childcare during Family Orientation, Spring and Fall conferences and at the Spring Open House. Confirmation students can use childcare time for service hours.  High School students are invited to contribute Citizenship Issues volunteer hours at First Learning Center.  Contact This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Preschool Board

The First Learning Center Board governs the mission, philosophy, and operation of First Learning Center. With a focus on long-range planning and the establishment of policies and procedures, the board is committed to ensuring that First Learning Center maintains an outstanding and unique program.  The Board consists of five to seven members who have a strong interest in the mission and ministry of First Learning Center.  Board members are solicited from the congregation, with at least one parent representative. The Board meets at 7:00 p.m. on the 4th Thursday of each month at First Lutheran. Input from parents and members of the congregation or staff is valued.
