Serving our Local Community

The Body of Christ reaches far beyond the walls of our congregation.  God calls us to step out in faith and service to those around us.  First Lutheran is a community committed to being in ministry with a wide array of local organizations and ministries so that the message the Gospel can be shared and people embraced with God's love.

Matt Talbot Kitchen

Matt Talbot Kitchen & Outreach provides a variety of hunger, education and outreach programs but is most noted for serving two meals, lunch and dinner, seven days a week to homeless and low-income individuals. More than 130 people are served by this ministry each month and the need in our community continues to grow.

Volunteers from First Lutheran prepare and serve lunch on the third Tuesday of each month (meal preparation is the night before at 7:00 PM).   A sign-up sheet for volunteers may be found on the Service Opportunities bulletin board in the Commons between the Sanctuary and the Activity Center.

F.E.A.S.T.

F.E.A.S.T. stands for Friends Eating and Singing, Studying & Sharing Together.  First helps support this prison ministry by providing and serving an occasional meal at the main host church - Our Savior's Lutheran Church - and being hosts ourselves at various times throughout the year.  This effort allows those incarcerated at the Community Corrections Center, or recently released, to meet with their families for a meal, worship, and Bible study.  Watch the bulletin boards in the Commons for the next opportunity to get involved in this program.

Going Green

The Social Ministry Committee is leading an effort to strengthen the recycling program at First Lutheran.  We currently have blue containers to recycle paper and soda pop cans and red containers for plastic (#1 - #5).  Watch for details on how you can help us be green at First Lutheran.

Meals on Wheels

Our local Meals-on-Wheels service is operated by Tabitha Health Care Services, a ministry of the ELCA.  First Lutheran has been a long-standing ministry partner with Tabitha to provide meals to our homebound community neighbors.  In addition to many of our members serving as dedicated drivers we recently assisted with fundraising efforts of the Meals on Wheels Endowment Fund.

Meals on Wheels is always in need of more drivers, so please contact the church if you would like to volunteer. There is also a sign up sheet on the service bulletin board in the Commons area.

People's City Mission

The People's City Mission is more than just a place to get food and a homeless shelter in downtown Lincoln, it is a place where people are respected and loved, where all people are seen as God's precious children.  First Lutheran remains involved with the People's City Mission throughout the year, sending representatives to advisory board meetings, volunteering, and conducting clothing and supply drives.

The current focus of our high school youth group's Not in Our Town mission initiative is to rebuild the recreation building used by Club E.D.E.F.Y. (Encouragement, Discipleship, Evangelism, and Fellowship for Youth) at the mission.
