Vision 2020: Looking toward the Future
“ . . . suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting” (Acts 2:2)
When the Holy Spirit first visited the infant church on Pentecost, it so filled the house that the disciples were pushed out into the street. In some ways, the Spirit “blew the doors off” the church—sending its members out into the world, and inviting the world back into its life.
Vision 2020 is a work inspired by the same Spirit. As a vision of what First Lutheran is called to be in 2020, it invites the congregation into a perpetual process of “blowing the doors off,” drawing people in and sending them back out.
Vision 2020 really began in 2005, when First prepared to rebuild a ministry staff. The congregation’s input provided a sort of self-assessment of its ministry and mission. That process was followed by two series of intentional conversations, the drafting of a proposed plan, and more conversation before the congregation formally adopted the vision in January 2009.
Vision 2020 is organized under the theme, “Faithfully Inspiring, Reaching, Serving & Teaching . . . by the grace of God!” Each area—inspiring (worship), reaching (hospitality), serving (service), teaching (education)—became a section of the vision, along with a fifth section, “Support,” that lays out the resources needed to sustain the vision.
Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a long-time member, we’re grateful for your interest in this vision for ministry. Look with us into the future God is putting before us!
