We understand "evangelical" to be an adjective, not a noun.  Properly used, it means "gospel-centered." Because all we do is centered around the good news ("gospel") of God's love in Jesus Christ, we understand ourselves to be evangelical Christians (in Martin Luther's homeland, in fact, Lutherans are not called Lutheran but simply "Evangelical").
