Serving Globally

We see the church as something much bigger than just our own congregation here in Lincoln.  At First Lutheran we understand ourselves to be part of something much bigger - the Nebraska synod, the ELCA, the world-wide Lutheran movement and the global Christian faith.  This understanding of who we are and our role guides us in our efforts to serve those around the world.

Global Mission in Action

Realizing that our role in God's work in the world is not just about writing checks or collecting "things" but about extending God's love and hospitality to all neighbors, the Global Mission in Action task force was created to explore and expand the global mission ministries of First Lutheran Church.  Conversations have focused on how to better partner with Nebraska Synod's sister synods in Tanzania and in Argentina and Uruguay, as well other global outreach opportunities.  The greater goal of the Global Mission in Action task force is to move from conversation to action.

The task force typically gathers on the third Monday of each month and often invites guest speakers from the greater Lincoln and Christian communities to share how they have engaged the world around us.

We are Advocates for Justice and Peace!

The Social Ministry Committee coordinates advocacy efforts from time to time as critical issues arise.  In the past we have worked toward passing anti-bullying legislation for Nebraska's schools, a moratorium on capital punishment, alleviating global hunger and sponsoring the annual Hiroshima-Nagasaki Lantern Float.

Fair Trade Products

Micah 6:8 calls us, as Christians, to do justice, love mercy and walk humbly with our God.  The Lutheran World Relief (LWR) Fair Trade Coffee Project helps us answer that call by righting the injustices faced by small-scale farmers around the world.

Coffee is big business - it's one of the most heavily traded commodities in the world.  But for the majority of small-scale coffee farmers, the benefits are few.  The LWR Fair Trade Coffee Project ensures that more of the money you spend on coffee reaches the farmers who actually grow it.  Fair trade coffee is a simple solution that means the difference - quite literally - between surviving and not surviving for small-scale coffee farmers.

First is a Fair Trade Coffee church!  At all of our fellowship events and throughout the week we serve fairly traded coffee.  By doing this we are helping farmers earn the income they need to feed their families, educate their children, seek medical care and improve their communities.

Fair Trade products, including coffee, tea and chocolate, are for sale the first Sunday of the month from 9:30 to 10:30 AM.
