Serving Congregationally
Caring for each other is another way First Lutheran reaches out. We know life can often be unpredictable, challenging, and difficult. First Lutheran has resources to help you cope and ministries designed to help you weather the hard times and to celebrate the good times. Below are just some of the ways we offer support and care within the congregation. |
Keeping God’s People In Stitches
First Lutheran is blessed to have stitchers committed to making prayer shawls, chemo caps and afghans. They gather the 2nd and 4th Monday of the month, 7:00 to 8:30 PM, at the church. (Check the calendar for the summer schedule or if the usual date falls on a holiday.) Bring your yarn, needles (or crochet hook) and your projects. Come stitch – sharing stories and prayers while you work.
Don’t let a conflict with the Monday evening gatherings keep you from being a part of this important ministry. Stay at home stitchers are welcome, too.
There are many websites and books that have patterns if you need help getting started. Not a stitcher but wanting to learn? We have patient teachers that will help you get started on a project and we also have donated yarn available.

Stephen Ministry
Stephen Ministers are trained and supervised lay caregivers who provide one-to-one Christian, confidential care to people in the congregation who are bereaved, hospitalized, terminally ill, separated, divorced, unemployed, relocated or facing a crisis or life challenge. Assigned care-givers help pastors and congregations provide quality caring ministry through weekly conversations with a care-receiver. Stephen Ministers complete fifty hours of training and are asked to commit at least two years to the program.

Eucharistic Ministers
Eucharistic Ministers take communion, on a regular basis, from our Sunday worship to members who are homebound. Here is what one Eucharistic Minister had to say...
"What’s more special than getting together for a meal? Very seldom do I spend time with family or friends without sitting down at a table to eat. During that meal, we share intimate thoughts, concerns, joys, sorrows, and our love for each other.
It’s also around a table that I gather each week with my family at First. Together we share the bread and wine. Together we receive the body and blood of our Lord. Together we share intimate thoughts, concerns, joys, sorrows, and the love of Christ.
But some of our family members are no longer able to join us for this meal. So as a Eucharistic Minister, I pack that meal in a small, round basket and take it to one of our sisters in Christ. Once each month, we sit at her kitchen table and I represent all of First’s family when I open that small basket. I tell her “we bring to you this word of life, and this bread and cup of blessing, so that you may share in these same gifts and be strengthened in communion with all the people of God.”
When beginning this ministry over a year ago, I knew the visits would be another way for First to share Christ’s love in a special way. What I didn’t realize was how special each visit would become for me as well. But after all, what’s more special than getting together for a meal?"

Health & Wellness Ministry
Caring for one's own health is a matter of human necessity and good stewardship. Caring for the health of others expresses both love for neighbors and responsibility for a just society. The Health & Wellness Ministry mission is to holistically provide physical, mental and spiritual health support for the church community as expressed by our faith, as sustained and supported by God. Projects include workshops, bringing the blood mobile to First Lutheran, monthly blood pressure checks, Journey to Jerusalem, volunteering at the Special Olympic games and walking adventures.
