The "Great Debate' of evolution vs. creation is an emotionally packed, ongoing discussion. The popular media often portrays the creation vs. evolution debate as religion vs. science. So how does one reconcile the discoveries of science and the history of religion? During this unit of Growing in Faith Through the Lens of Science, we will explore this hot topic and begin a discussion of whether the two thoughts can be compatible. Can a person be open to new scientific thoughts and discoveries of science and still maintain their faith in God and belief in the teachings of the Bible?
The keynote speaker for Unit 2 is Dr. Kenneth Miller, professor of Biology at Brown University and author of many publications including Finding Darwin's God and Only a Theory: Evolution and the Battle for America's Soul. Dr. Miller has been at the forefront of the "Darwin Wars" and maintains that science and religion offer different, but compatible ways of viewing the world. In his book Finding Darwin's God, Miller writes, "...in even the most traditional sense, evolutionary biology is not at all the obstacle we believe it to be. In many respects, evolution is the key to understanding our relationship with God."
