Unit 1: Brain Science

Is there a connection between “church” music and our religious experiences and spiritualty?  Does scientific evidence point to connections between music and our memories, thoughts, and emotions?

Beginning in February, First Lutheran will focus on the Brain Science segment of our Growing in Faith Through the Lens of Science series, funded by a Scientists in Congregations grant from the John Templeton Foundation.

On March 15, Dr. Petr Janata, University of California - Davis researcher, will kick off our study of Brain Science with a lecture/discussion held at Nebraska Wesleyan University, Olin B Lecture Hall at 7:00 PM. The following day, March 16, Dr. Janata will join scholars and other interested parties for a Brown Bag Discussion at First Lutheran at 12:00 Noon.

Dr Petr Janata is an Associate Professor at UC Davis in the Psychology Department and Center for Mind and Brain. Janata, in collaboration with other researchers, has done extensive research on "the connection between music, spirituality, and religion; specifically the relationship between these integral aspects of human culture in terms of underlying psychological and neuroscientific principles." http://tarp.ucdavis.edu This study was also funded by the Templeton Foundation. Janata will share his findings in this and other areas of research involving the human brain.

Further discussion about the study of the brain will also take place at The Science Café (Adult Forum) on March 4 and 11 from 9:30-10:30 am.
